New edition to the Medicinal arsenal this year… Elderberry+ Tincture.

Yes I still have, make and use Elderberry syrup, but since some of the herbs I use are intended to ease those awful symptoms that come with a cold/flu, it is somewhat of a waste to use the syrup for preventative purposes. (and those herbs and honey can get expensive if you take syrup everyday, vs if you take it only when sick).

So for this reason, I decided to make a preventative concoction, generally a more simplified version of the syrup but simply meant to boost the immune system: Elderberries, Echinacea and Rosehip tincture.

Let me introduce you to a new word that marvelously describes health benefits of Elderberries! “Immunomodulator”… which means it not only stimulates our immune system, but it also aids the body to ‘self adjust’ its level of needed immunity!  Continue reading

‘Arm’ yourself with Herbs for cold/flu…not a shot!

So as I sit in the waiting room to get tires on my vehicle while listening to people already coughing and sniffling; I am reminded that cold and flu season is here or near! And, while I have already started vamping up my own arsenal, I thought it would be helpful to provide a list of natural remedies that anyone can make at home.

As you probably know, if just one member of your family gets ill…

  • it will most definitely spread to other family members, and caretakers
  • can cause loss of time at work/school
  • spread to people outside the immediate family (i.e. other children, grandparents, co-workers, people in stores and restaurants, etc)
  • and even after recovery, could leave one open to a ’round 2′ (since most likely the immune system hasn’t had time to fully recover)

So the take-home for us here is prevention first, treatment second, immune system building third! Continue reading

Rootin’ Tootin’ “Root” Beer…or Tea

OH how I love root beer, always have…always will! And Root Beer (or even Birch Beer) Floats…well you can’t get much better than that! BUT, I haven’t touched a soda of any kinds in at least 4 yrs. Today’s sodas aren’t what soda’s of the past were made of. In fact….some of you are too young to remember this (and some have never heard of this before) but ‘soda’ (aka: root beer) used to be sold at counter tops (soda fountains) in drug stores. I can remember my grandfather taking us to one when we were young, climbing up on the seemingly large round stools to sit at the counter and having a root beer float while he got his prescriptions. But even then, those were commercial processed sodas. But long before the commercial brands, root beer was sold in drug dispensaries as a way to take herbal remedies and mask the taste of medicines (even ‘opium’ in the 1800’s) for children!

Thats right…root beer was made from real plant ROOTS; sassafras, sarsaparilla and licorice. Hence the name… Continue reading
